You bought a cage. Or you're thinking about it. Either way, the first time is confusing. Here's what you need to know to start safely.
Step 1: Pick Your First Cage
Your first cage should be cheap and plastic. The Holy Trainer or a generic Amazon resin cage works. You are going to get the size wrong. Everyone does. A cheap first cage lets you learn without a big investment.
Do not start with a custom steel cage. Do not start with a silicone cage (too easy to escape). Get a rigid plastic cage with at least three ring sizes. Most starter kits come with multiple rings.
Step 2: Measure Correctly
The two measurements that matter:
Ring size. Measure the circumference of your scrotum where the ring will sit (behind the balls, around the shaft). The string method works: wrap a piece of string around, mark the overlap, measure the length in millimeters. Divide by pi to get diameter. Most rings are sized by diameter (40mm, 45mm, 50mm).
Cage length. Measure your flaccid penis from the base to the tip. Subtract 10-15%. The cage should be slightly shorter than your flaccid length. A snug fit prevents partial erections from pulling the cage away from the body.
The most common beginner mistake is buying a cage that's too long. Shorter is more comfortable and more secure.
Step 3: Test the Ring First
Before you put the cage on, wear just the ring for a few hours. The ring is the part that causes problems. If the ring doesn't fit, nothing else matters.
The ring should be snug enough that it doesn't slide off but loose enough that you can fit a fingertip between the ring and your body. If it leaves a deep red mark after an hour, it's too tight. If it slides down your scrotum, it's too loose.
Wear the ring during the day. Sleep in it if you can. If the ring works for 24 hours, you have the right size.
Step 4: First Lock-Up
Apply lubricant to the ring and the inside of the cage. Coconut oil works. Pull your scrotum through the ring one ball at a time. Push the cage over your flaccid penis. Lock the device.
If you can't get the cage on because you're too hard, wait. Do something else for ten minutes. Come back when you're soft. Trying to force a cage on while erect is painful and pointless.
The first time you lock up, your goal is one hour. Set a timer. Go about your business. See how it feels when you walk, sit, and move. If everything feels fine after an hour, remove the cage, check for any marks or irritation, and decide if you want to try longer.
Step 5: First Gooning Session
A locked session is different from an unlocked one. Do not expect to feel the same things. The first locked session is about learning, not about pleasure.
Use a vibrator on the cage. Explore prostate play. Focus on breath and sensation. If nothing feels good, that's normal. The first few sessions are training your brain to associate the cage with pleasure. It takes time.
End the session still locked if you can. The post-session period, when you're going about your day in the cage, is where the mental aspect develops.
Safety Guidelines
Remove the cage immediately if you experience:
- Numbness or color change (blue, purple, white)
- Sharp pain
- Burning during urination
- Skin breakdown or open sores
Do not sleep in the cage on your first night. Nighttime erections are stronger than daytime ones and will test the fit harder. Attempt overnight wear only after you've worn the cage comfortably for several full days.
Clean the cage every day. Remove, wash with soap and water, dry thoroughly, reapply lubricant, and re-lock. Neglecting hygiene causes rashes and infections.
When to Upgrade
You'll know it's time for a better cage when you can answer these questions:
- What ring size do I need?
- What cage length works best?
- Do I prefer open or enclosed design?
- How long do I want to wear it?
Once you know those answers, buy the quality cage. Most gooners end up with a Cobra (Kink3D) or a custom steel cage. The starter cage teaches you what you need.
The Bottom Line
Everyone gets the first cage wrong. The goal isn't to get it right the first time. The goal is to learn enough to get it right the second time. Start cheap, measure carefully, test the ring first, and don't expect the first session to be amazing.
Start with a beginner-friendly cage.
